The fork in the road – The choices we have after separation

When couples with children make the difficult decision to separate, there is option an assumption that you get to separate! The reality is when it comes to divorce or separation amongst couples that have children together, there is a need to remain, at some level, together, in a partnership. So your ability to completely divorce yourself from your partner is not the case. Remember, the kids still have two parents.

There is also the assumption that the conflict in the lead up to separation will resolve. In many cases, the conflict often becomes worse as a result of decisions made after separation. There are some challenging decisions to work through, so it needs patience and understanding.

What people often don’t realise is that there is a choice, a fork in the road, when it comes to divorce that will significantly influence your journey. The path you take will impact you in both the short and long term. If you take the wrong path, it will lead to despair and resentment, along with a range of mental health issues. In some cases, it leads to chronic health issue and even suicide.

Remember, what happens to the parents, happens to the children. If you think the kids don’t feel it, think again. Children are more in tune than what we given them credit. Kids notice. The wrong path will also be potentially financially crippling, fracture relationships with friends and family, and compromise the supports that where in place prior to the separation.

The team at Mindful Action will help you with;

  • navigating life after divorce, including the options when it comes to mediation, legal pathways, family court, and parenting plans
