How mindfulness exercises can change our brains
Mindfulness can be described as: “Paying attention in a particular way: on purpose, in the present moment, and non-judgmentally." It’s a profound way to enhance psychological and emotional resilience and increase life satisfaction.
Research shows that mindfulness training actually changes our brains. And while mindfulness is the current buzzword in the business world, its benefits are backed by hard, scientific evidence.
A 2011 study by Harvard University found that mindfulness meditation significantly increases the density of grey matter—the regions of the brain involved in memory, decision-making and self-control. Most affected is the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) region, increasing our ability to:
· purposefully direct attention and behaviour
· suppress inappropriate knee-jerk responses
· switch strategies flexibly
· resist distractions
· learn from past experiences to support optimal decision-making
Mindfulness also reinforces the hippocampus, leading to increased resilience against stress and stress-related disorders.
