The health sector, particularly for NDIS Support Workers and Support Coordinators, is incredibly demanding. While focused on participant well-being, the mental health of these dedicated individuals is often overlooked. This oversight impacts not only staff, but the quality and sustainability of the entire workforce.

The Invisible Toll.
Support workers regularly face emotionally draining and potentially traumatic situations, leading to:
👉 Burnout: Chronic exhaustion, cynicism, and reduced accomplishment.
👉 Compassion Fatigue: Emotional and physical drain from constant caring.
👉 Secondary Trauma: Vicarious trauma from participant experiences.
Left unaddressed, these issues fuel anxiety, depression, hinder empathetic care, and drive high staff turnover.
Burnout is alarmingly prevalent in the NDIS workforce.
👉 A 2022 NDIS Workforce Retention survey found 43% of NDIS workers felt burned out a lot, with 12% feeling burned out almost all the time.
👉 One-third (31%) reported emotional drain, and 29% physical exhaustion.
👉 High workload is a major driver of low retention, with 43% feeling burned out due to it.
👉 The NDIS workforce faces a high 17-25% annual turnover rate, meaning thousands leave each year.
The Power of Debriefing.
Debriefing offers a critical, often underutilised, solution. It's a structured, safe space for support workers to process their experiences, helping to:
👉 Process Difficult Events: Normalise reactions and prevent bottling up emotions.
👉 Reduce Emotional Burden: Offload stress and intense feelings.
👉Promote Learning: Reflect, learn, and grow from experiences.
👉 Strengthen Team Cohesion: Build empathy and mutual support among colleagues.
👉 Identify Support Needs: Flag those requiring further professional help.
👉 Enhance Empathy & Performance: Supported staff maintain empathy and improve overall performance.
**While not a substitute for therapy, debriefing acts as an early intervention, identifying needs for deeper support.
Cultivating a Culture of Care:
For debriefing to be effective, organisations must:
👉 Prioritise it: Make it a standard practice.
👉 Provide Training: Equip leaders to facilitate effective sessions.
👉 Ensure Accessibility: Make sessions readily available.
👉 Foster a Culture of Support: Implement changes that promote work-life balance and value staff well-being.
People need to feel heard as much as they offer a listening ear to their participants. Together, we can build and sustain a strong and resilient workforce, but the time and money need to be invested in staff to ensure a successful future.
